Philippians 1:1-6

Prayer

As servants of Jesus Christ, we pray for (person’s name you are praying for) in Christ Jesus, including the elders, deacons, and pastors.
We pray with the grace and peace that comes from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.
We thank You God upon every remembrance of our fellow servants.
Always in every petition of ours for all who we are praying for we make our requests with joy, for their fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now; Being confident of this very thing, that You, Lord, who have begun a good work in us will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.

This year, I hope to read through the Bible, but here it is January 11, 2012, and I am just now starting. Genesis 1, 2, and 3 are the Old Testament chapters. Psalm 1 is also the reading, and here is what it says in the New Living Translation NLT:

 1 Oh, the joys of those who do not
      follow the advice of the wicked,
      or stand around with sinners,
      or join in with mockers.
 2 But they delight in the law of the LORD,
      meditating on it day and night.
 3 They are like trees planted along the riverbank,
      bearing fruit each season.
   Their leaves never wither,
      and they prosper in all they do.
 4 But not the wicked! They are like worthless chaff, scattered by the wind.  5 They will be condemned at the time of judgment. Sinners will have no place among the godly.  6 For the LORD watches over the path of the godly, but the path of the wicked leads to destruction.


The very first Psalm, and God begins with a promise and a warning. He promises us blessings and joy if we stay away from sinners and scoffers. Why? Because we are so easily drawn into and influenced by their wrongdoing.

Looking back over my 73 years, I can assure you that when the wicked die it is a tragedy because of the terrible life they lived. A lifetime of wrongdoing has its consequences that we don’t think we will experience when we are young. But we can’t escape the consequences, and they are painful and unbearable. The wicked are looked upon with disgust and relief when they die. Because of their life of destruction and the pain they heaped on others, people around them are actually grateful when the wicked die. What a relief! Do we really want to be remembered that way? Do we really want to feel the horror of being condemned as we slip away from this earth?

We don’t have to if we believe Jesus is our Savior, delight in God’s Word, constantly meditate on it, and try to live by it. We bear fruit that blesses others. We prosper spiritually in our understanding of God’s Word, and our growth in living it out. No matter what we suffer during our lifelong journey, we can be assured that God is constantly watching over us and guiding us along the right path. When we leave this earth, our Holy Comforter will fill our soul with peace and joy as we enter into God’s presence. Discover the joy of delighting in the Lord and His Word. Choose to walk with God and when you come to the end of your life, you will be greatly blessed.
